I have some fillings that are going on 20 years. I am not sure how long they are supposed to last. How do you know when they have gone bad? Does the tooth to start hurting or what?
In addition, what about replacing them with something other than a mercury based metal?

It depends on a lot of things, basically if they look darker now, if you can see a crack between the filling and the tooth(the doctor may see this better)It may hurt also, but not necessarily.....

You can replace them with a resin witch is white, you wont be able to notice the difference with your teeth, better esthetics on those type of materials. they could sting a little for a couple of weeks, but that would be normal also, it'll go away......

My insurance covered the replacements. They look better too, cause the replacements matched the white of my teeth.

I had all of my mercury fillings replaced with white fillings to match my tooth color.

I would highly recommend it and hopefully your insurance should cover most of the cost.

actually the amount of mercury the fillings have is not enough to harm you, sorry I can't post any links, but I'll try to find one, as this information is something I read in college........

I read a similar study in college. They based the mercury warning on how much mercury leeched into the blood of sheep that they gave fillings to. Sheep apparently have a natural overbite and grind - and would grind the mercury and swallow it apparently which they later discovered skewed the results.

My dentist claims all her kids got mercury fillings.
